Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Sparks Rumors of Switch 2 Remake Reveal

The buzz around a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has reignited following Square Enix's launch of an official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. The site, available in Japanese, marks the game's release date on July 7, 2000, and celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The announcement teases "various projects, including merchandise and collaborations" to commemorate the milestone, fueling speculation about a long-awaited remake.

The timing of the website's launch has not gone unnoticed by fans, especially with Nintendo set to hold a Switch 2-focused Direct on April 2. Many are hopeful that Square Enix might unveil the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the Switch 2 during this event. However, the mention of "various projects" on the anniversary site has left room for speculation and excitement.

Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, hinted at the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9, citing its extensive content. He suggested that, similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, a Final Fantasy 9 remake might need to be split into multiple titles. Earlier this year, Yoshi-P announced Final Fantasy 9-themed extras for the Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion Dawntrail, including the Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion. Pre-orders also included a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at more Final Fantasy 9 references, adding to the intrigue.

While the leak included games like the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC, which have since been confirmed or released, the Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed.
