GTA 5 Enhanced Edition Receives Lowest User Ratings on Steam

by Owen May 28,2025

Rockstar Games' latest iteration of Grand Theft Auto 5, dubbed Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, has not been well-received by the Steam community since its launch on March 4. The game currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating, with only 54% of the 19,772 reviews being positive. This is in stark contrast to the original GTA 5 on Steam, which, although unlisted at Rockstar's request and no longer searchable, boasts a 'very positive' review rating.

Interestingly, GTA 5 Enhanced is now the lowest-rated GTA title on Steam, even falling below Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, which sits at 66% positive reviews. The Enhanced version is a complimentary upgrade for PC owners of GTA 5, bringing features that were initially exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of GTA Online. These include access to Hao’s Special Works for the latest vehicles and performance upgrades, animal encounters, the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership, enhanced graphics options, and faster loading times. All existing PC players can upgrade for free and transfer their Story Mode and Online progress.

Several reviews highlight frustration over migration errors, with one player stating, "‘The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time,’" and expressing strong dissatisfaction with the prospect of losing nearly 700 hours of gameplay. Another review criticized the upgrade as a "downgrade" and vowed to stick with the legacy version until the release of a new game, expected when they are 60 years old.

Further negative feedback focuses on Rockstar's decision to restrict some accounts from migration, with customer support reportedly unable to resolve these issues. One reviewer lamented, "I can't migrate either of my two accounts," and expressed reluctance to restart their progress for minor graphical improvements and new features like HSW.

Despite the backlash, GTA 5 Enhanced has seen significant engagement, with a peak of 187,059 concurrent players on Steam. However, these issues have raised concerns among PC gamers about the potential launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, especially given the planned console-exclusive release in the fall of 2025. A former Rockstar developer in December 2023 tried to reassure PC gamers, urging them to trust the studio's approach to the staggered release schedule.
