Rockstar Games has confirmed GTA 6's official launch window, revealing an unexpected delay pushing the release into 2026. Here's what we know about their decision and how it impacts other upcoming game releases.
Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) ranks among the most eagerly awaited gaming titles, with excitement building since its initial trailer reveal. Following years of anticipation, Rockstar Games has announced a revised launch date for GTA 6 that may disappoint eager fans.
In a May 2 tweet, Rockstar confirmed GTA 6 will now release on May 26, 2026 - a surprising delay considering Take-Two Interactive's previous Fall 2025 projection during their Q3 earnings call.
The developers expressed regret for the postponement, stating: "We appreciate your patience as we take this additional time to deliver the quality experience our fans deserve." Rockstar promises more details about the game will follow soon.
Take-Two Interactive fully endorsed Rockstar's decision to extend development. In a May 2 statement, CEO Strauss Zelnick explained their position:
"We fully support Rockstar's commitment to realizing their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI. This groundbreaking experience will redefine entertainment standards and surpass player expectations."
The delay coincides with recent adjustments to other Take-Two titles. Last week, Gearbox Entertainment announced moving Borderlands 4's launch forward by two weeks, though they denied any connection to GTA 6's scheduling.
Take-Two remains confident in their lineup: "Our exceptional pipeline of titles positions us for sustained growth and increased shareholder value in the coming years."
Publisher Devolver Digital responded to the GTA 6 delay announcement by confirming they'll still launch a mystery title on May 26. Their Twitter statement read: "You can't escape us," maintaining their March pledge to compete directly with Rockstar's flagship release.
Devolver hasn't specified which of their franchises - including potential sequels to Cult of the Lamb or Enter the Gungeon - will square off against GTA 6, or whether they'll introduce new IP.
Meanwhile, other publishers reportedly plan to avoid GTA 6's launch window entirely. Industry sources indicate multiple unnamed studios are considering postponing their releases to steer clear of Rockstar's juggernaut.
Despite the setback, excitement remains high for Rockstar's next open-world epic. Grand Theft Auto VI is now scheduled for May 26, 2025 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated title!
