James Gunn Reveals First Look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

by Eric Apr 24,2025

Excitement is building as DC has officially started filming their next major cinematic venture, *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow*. To mark this milestone, DC's head honcho, James Gunn, took to Bluesky to share a first glimpse of Milly Alcock stepping into the iconic role of Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. The snapshot features Alcock seated in her actor's chair, offering fans a tantalizing teaser of what's to come.

Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Thrilled to see camera roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El." This confirms that Gillespie, acclaimed for his work on *Cruella* and *I, Tonya*, will direct the film, as previously announced last April.

While details remain scarce, *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* is inspired by the critically acclaimed graphic novel of the same name by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Norgueira. The narrative follows an alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, who seeks Supergirl's aid in avenging her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. The graphic novel was a strong contender for "Best Limited Series" at the 2022 Eisner Awards and is highly recommended for fans and newcomers alike.

Joining Alcock in the cast are Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham portraying Supergirl's mother, and Jason Momoa, who has been recast in the DC universe as the bounty hunter Lobo.

*Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* is the second film in the revamped DC universe, following James Gunn's *Superman*, set to hit theaters this summer. The DC slate also includes *The Batman Part II*, which may or may not connect to Gunn's broader cinematic universe, and a rumored *Clayface* film directed by Mike Flanagan.
