Keanu Reeves Seeks Authentic Constantine 2, Resists Action-Heavy Overhaul

Fans of Keanu Reeves will be pleased to hear that a sequel to his iconic film Constantine is in development, though a co-star from the 2005 original recently shared that Reeves is dissatisfied with the current scripts.

"There’s been much debate, as Keanu [Reeves] isn’t thrilled with the scripts," actor Peter Stormare told The Direct in a recent interview. "The first film wasn’t a box-office hit initially but grew into a cult classic over time, becoming one of the most celebrated cult films. Now, studios want a sequel filled with high-flying cars and acrobatic fight scenes."

Stormare, who played Lucifer in the original and will return for the sequel, noted that Reeves prefers a more grounded approach, avoiding an action-driven spectacle.

"Keanu has said, ‘I’ve done John Wick. This film is about spirituality, demons, and ordinary people, and I want to preserve that essence,’" Stormare recounted. "We discussed keeping my portrayal of God similar to Lucifer from the first film, but in a black suit. I’m 12 years older now, so matching the original exactly is tough, but Keanu wants the sequel to stay true to the original’s spirit."

Reeves is also wary of Warner Bros.’ push to transform the project into a grandiose production reminiscent of Marvel films, a direction that may not suit Constantine, which draws loosely from the DC and Vertigo comic series Hellblazer. Reeves recently discussed the project with DC Studios, but he believes an overly extravagant approach would detract from the film’s unique appeal.

"The original took years to gain its cult status, and it resonated deeply with audiences," Stormare said. "There’s no need for excessive action or shootouts. Other films do that. Don’t turn this into a Marvel-style spectacle with constant wire stunts and gunfire. Let it stay true to its roots."

Director Francis Lawrence will helm the sequel, though its production start date and release remain uncertain.
