Keipo and the Leviathan Heart: A Decision in Avowed

by Zoe May 27,2025

The final decision in the "Heart of Valor" side quest of *Avowed* presents players with a challenging choice concerning Keipo and the precious Leviathan Heart. After Chiko discovers that their uncle intends to use the heart to end his life due to the Dreamscourge, and Keipo's revelation that half of his Leviathan story was a lie to cover up his partner Umpara’s death, the player faces multiple paths based on their choices.

The core narrative branch in this quest hinges on whether to give Keipo the Leviathan Heart, which results in different outcomes and unique loot depending on the decision. However, there's a strategy to secure all available gear through specific dialogue choices.

Should You Give Keipo the Leviathan Heart in Avowed?

It's confirmed that you should not give Keipo the Leviathan Heart at the end of *Avowed’s* "Heart of Valor" side quest. This choice allows you to obtain all the possible loot without diminishing the hope of Thirdborn by exposing Keipo's secret. To achieve this, you must find and read Keipo’s Weathered Journal, located by pressing a button on the curved stone structure near where you found the Leviathan Heart.

We'll first detail the base rewards for each decision path before discussing the specific dialogue choices needed to acquire everything.

Reward for Giving Keipo the Leviathan Heart

By fulfilling Keipo's dying wish and handing over the Leviathan Heart, you receive Umpara’s Spear, a keepsake from his fallen partner who died during their Leviathan hunt. This powerful Exceptional Quality +1/3 weapon boasts the following stats and abilities:

Physical Damage88
Stun84
Stamina Cost13
Critical Hit Chance6%
Ability #1Deadly Mechanism: Power Attacks launch a poison dart
Ability #2Strike the Heart: +25% Critical Hit Damage

Reward for Not Giving Keipo the Leviathan Heart

Refusing to give Keipo the Leviathan Heart and making the correct dialogue choices with Chiko afterward will earn you the Stormdancer armor set. Additionally, you can keep the Leviathan Heart as a Unique Trinket item, granting a +20% Attack Damage boost at the cost of slowly draining your health. The Stormdancer armor set includes the following pieces with detailed stats and abilities:

**Stormdancer Armor Piece****Quality****Damage Reduction****Additional Damage Reduction****Maximum Stamina****Maximum Essence****Ability #1****Ability #2**

To obtain these armor pieces, select the following dialogue options when Chiko says, "I’m sorry my uncle is sick…":

  • "Uh…about that. He’s not just sick. It’s the Dreamscourge."
  • "He wanted to die before he turned. He was trying to keep you safe."
  • "There *is* one way. We just stopped him from doing it."

The third option is crucial; choosing incorrectly will upset Chiko, causing them to leave and curse your name, leaving you without the Stormdancer armor pieces.

How To Get All the Loot in Heart of Valor

To acquire every piece of gear at the end of *Avowed’s* Heart of Valor side quest—the Leviathan Heart, Umpara’s Spear, and the entire Stormdancer armor set—without exposing Keipo’s secret to Thirdborn, you must follow these dialogue choices in the exact order when speaking to both Keipo and Chiko, after finding Keipo’s Weathered Journal:

Talking to Keipo

  • "We need to talk. Now."
  • "Come clean. Chiko told me you want to end your life."
  • "We wouldn’t be having this conversation if you had the Dreamscourge."
  • "I’m sorry. I can’t give you the heart."
  • "I respect your choice. But I can’t be a part of it."
  • "Listen. I…I know what happened to Umpara."
  • "And? Why didn’t you tell the truth?"
  • "That’s why you really trapped the ruins. So no one would find out."
  • "No. The truth would do more harm than good."

Note that discussing Umpara’s fate first will prevent you from receiving Umpara’s Spear upon refusing to give Keipo the Leviathan Heart. Only by discussing Umpara’s fate last can you secure both.

Talking to Chiko

  • "Don’t worry. It’s right here with me."
  • "He wanted to take his own life with it. Chiko stepped in to prevent that."
  • "Let me hold onto it. I’ll take it far away and keep it safe."
  • "[Lie] No, that was all."
  • "Uh…about that. He’s not just sick. It’s the Dreamscourge."
  • "He wanted to die before he turned. He was trying to keep you safe."
  • "There *is* one way. We just stopped him from doing it."

If you give Keipo the Leviathan Heart and receive Umpara’s Spear, you can still get the Stormdancer armor set from Chiko by revealing Keipo's Dreamscourge affliction and repeating the final two dialogue choices listed above. However, this means exposing Keipo’s secret about Umpara to Tira Nui Hajime, resulting in Thirdborn losing its most hopeful story and missing out on the Leviathan Heart.

By following our exact order of dialogue choices, you'll obtain a powerful armor set, a unique spear, the Leviathan Heart as a trinket, and maintain a semblance of happiness in this bittersweet situation—without having to choose between one or the other.
