Kojima Announces Anime Adaptation of Death Stranding

by Zoe Jul 15,2025

It seems *Death Stranding* is expanding its reach beyond gaming and into the world of live-action film—and now, anime. In a recent interview with *Vogue Japan*, shared via VGC ahead of the June 2025 release of *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach*, legendary game director Hideo Kojima casually dropped news that an anime adaptation is currently in development.

During the conversation, Kojima discussed his ongoing partnership with A24 for the live-action film adaptation of *Death Stranding*. He expressed his cinematic ambitions, stating:

"I want to pursue expression as a film. I am aiming to make 'DEATH STRANDING' in a way that can only be done as a film, and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation."

While no specific studio was named for the anime project, this confirmation has already sparked excitement among fans. It appears *Death Stranding* is evolving into a multimedia franchise, offering different interpretations across multiple formats.

The live-action movie, being developed by A24, was confirmed back in 2023. At the time, Kojima emphasized it wouldn’t be a direct translation of the game but rather a new entry within the *Death Stranding* universe crafted specifically for the big screen. The goal? To create something accessible not just to gamers, but to all film lovers.

Joining the project earlier this year was director Michael Sarnoski (*A Quiet Place: Day One*), who will write and direct the film. Meanwhile, star Norman Reedus—who plays protagonist Sam Porter Bridges—has already voiced interest in reprising his role if given the opportunity.

Now with the anime adaptation added to the mix, creative possibilities multiply. Depending on which studio takes the helm, the *Death Stranding* universe could see a fresh visual and narrative interpretation. Just imagine how Studio Trigger might reimagine the game’s surreal tone and action sequences—it's an exciting thought.
