MultiVersus Fans Mourn as Beloved Game Ends

by Riley Oct 02,2025

MultiVersus, the 2024 free-to-play crossover fighting game, will soon shut down permanently.

Player First Games revealed in January that MultiVersus Season 5 would be its final season, confirming the game will cease operations at 5pm PDT (12pm EDT) on May 30, 2025. Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly viewed the title as a commercial failure - during a November 2024 earnings call, executives acknowledged MultiVersus significantly underperformed expectations, resulting in a $100 million impairment charge for their gaming division. This compounded earlier losses totaling $300 million following the underwhelming release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January.

Within a month of this announcement, Warner Bros. scrapped its Wonder Woman title and shuttered three development studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and MultiVersus creator Player First Games.

In a farewell thread titled "Tomorrow MultiVersus shuts down - share your final thoughts about the game," hundreds of players reflected on their cherished experiences.

"MultiVersus fulfilled platform fighting fantasies with its fast-paced offensive mechanics and brilliant 2v2 teamwork design," shared one dedicated fan. "Beyond gameplay, the voice acting was phenomenal - having original actors like the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, and Eric Bauza voicing both Bugs and Marvin. Their interactive dialogue during matches was magical."

"While some character choices and moveset designs puzzled me (like Banana Guard appearing or Shaggy channeling Ultra Instinct), most fighters had incredibly creative kits. We'll likely never see another game quite like this."

"Nothing compares to that beta experience back in 2022," another player reminisced. "I became completely addicted to its breakneck gameplay pace. I remember playing nonstop during a sickness. While heartbreaking, I hope someday we might see a sequel or revival."

"This game earned a special place in my heart alongside PlayStation All-Stars," lamented one veteran, while another observed: "The Tom and Jerry duo became one of the most innovative fighters I've experienced, singlehandedly reigniting my passion for the genre."

Some fans remain cautiously hopeful, though most acknowledge the reality of its closure - particularly given what many describe as "the licensing nightmare" that would complicate any revival. Nevertheless, preservation efforts are underway before servers go dark.

As noted in IGN's MultiVersus review (where we awarded it an 8/10): "While not necessarily the go-to party fighter, MultiVersus delivered refreshing online team battles that elevated the platform fighter formula."
