Nintendo Warns U.S. Customers: Switch 2 Release Date Delivery Not Guaranteed Due to High Demand

by Chloe May 01,2025

Nintendo has issued a crucial update to U.S. fans eagerly awaiting the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, following its earlier announcement of struggling to meet demand in Japan. The company has now published an update on its website, cautioning those who have registered their interest in purchasing a Switch 2 from the My Nintendo Store that delivery by the June 5 release date cannot be guaranteed.

As a result, fans might receive their invitation emails to purchase the console after the Switch 2 launch. However, Nintendo assures that the shipping date will be confirmed upon purchase. The company expressed its gratitude and excitement over the high demand, stating, "Thank you to those of you who have already registered your interest in purchasing from My Nintendo Store. We're thrilled by the enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2! Due to the very high demand, we will be working diligently to fulfill orders as product becomes available, but delivery by June 5 is not guaranteed. Your invitation email may arrive after the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. We'll confirm your shipping date upon purchase."

Nintendo also suggested that fans might have a better chance of securing a Switch 2 at launch by pre-ordering from third-party retailers. This advice comes amidst reports that the Switch 2 has already sold out at many retailers following the opening of pre-orders. "If you wish to increase your opportunity of obtaining a Nintendo Switch 2 system at launch, please visit our participating retail partners above," the statement advised, directing fans to a GameStop link, though the console is currently sold out there as well. For those willing to wait, no further action is required after registering interest with My Nintendo Store.

The challenges faced by fans attempting to pre-order the Switch 2 on April 24, combined with Nintendo's warning, suggest that obtaining the next-gen console at launch will be difficult. Earlier this week, Nintendo issued a similar warning to its customers in Japan, with President Shuntaro Furukawa revealing that 2.2 million people had applied to pre-order directly from the company, far exceeding the available stock. Furukawa noted, "This extremely large number of applications... far exceeds our expectations, and far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store on June 5."

According to the FAQ on Nintendo's website, the first batch of invitation emails for the U.S. My Nintendo Store will be sent out starting May 8, 2025, with additional batches following periodically until purchasing is open to everyone. These initial invitations will be sent on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible registrants who meet specific priority criteria. Invitees will have 72 hours to complete their purchase once the email is sent.

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order invitation priority requirements:

  • You must have purchased any Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • You must have maintained any paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for at least 12 months.
  • You must have opted in to share gameplay data and have at least 50 hours of total gameplay.

Last week, Nintendo confirmed that Switch 2 pre-orders would start in the U.S. on April 24, 2025, with the original price of $449.99 and launch date of June 5 remaining unchanged. Additionally, the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle will stay at $499.99, and the prices for both the physical and digital versions of Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Donkey Kong Bananza ($69.99) will not change at launch. However, Nintendo has increased the prices of Switch 2 accessories due to ongoing tariff issues.

Nintendo had initially planned to open pre-orders for the Switch 2 on April 9 but delayed them to assess the potential impact of tariffs and market conditions.
