Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is gearing up for an unexpected leap to the big screen, with the dynamic duo of Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney at the helm. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has tapped the renowned director of the Transformers series, Michael Bay, to direct and produce the upcoming OutRun movie. Sydney Sweeney, known for her compelling performances, is also on board as a producer. The screenplay will be crafted by Jayson Rothwell, though plot details and a release date remain under wraps.
On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, who played a key role in the Sonic movies, will serve as a producer, while Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project. Originally launched in 1986, OutRun was a groundbreaking arcade driving game created by the legendary Sega developer Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen multiple iterations and ports, with its last major release being OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009. Despite its recent dormancy, Sega has been actively revisiting its rich catalog, with new titles in the works for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi.
Sega's venture into film adaptations has been notably successful, particularly with the Sonic movies, which have garnered a massive following. Last year, an adaptation of Like a Dragon: Yakuza premiered on Amazon, further showcasing Sega's commitment to bringing its beloved IPs to new audiences. The film industry's appetite for video game adaptations continues to grow, as evidenced by the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recent release of A Minecraft Movie.
As for the potential direction of the OutRun movie, fans might speculate that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney could be envisioning a high-octane, Fast & Furious-style action and driving extravaganza.
