With the release of *Persona 5 Royal*, Atlus' *Persona* series has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the JRPG genre. *Persona 5* has become so iconic that fans, often referred to as gamer-tourists, make pilgrimages to Shibuya station just to capture the famous shot of the Phantom Thieves overlooking the Shibuya Scramble. Interestingly, the station underwent renovations, but the iconic angle remains recognizable.
However, the path to this success was not a rapid ascent. The *Persona* series, a spin-off from Atlus' *Shin Megami Tensei* franchise, debuted nearly three decades ago. Contrary to what the numbering might suggest, there are actually six mainline *Persona* games, not counting the various spin-offs, remakes, and enhanced editions. For clarity, *Metaphor: ReFantazio* is not part of the *Persona* series.
Exploring the rich history of this 30-year-old JRPG saga is highly rewarding, though availability varies. Here’s a guide on where you can legally play all the mainline *Persona* games. Note that you might need to consider investing in a PSP for some titles.
Platforms | PS1, PlayStation Classic, PSP |
*Revelations: Persona*, launched in 1996 for the original PlayStation, was later ported to Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation Portable. The game’s narrative revolves around heroes who gain their personas through fortune-telling. Unfortunately, the most recent release was on the PlayStation Classic in 2018, meaning there’s no version available on modern hardware. You'll need to find a physical copy for your PS1, PlayStation Classic, or PSP. However, Atlus appears committed to remastering older titles, so a modern version might be on the horizon.
Platforms | PlayStation, PSP, PlayStation Vita |
Also known as *Persona 2: Innocent Sin*, this game debuted in Japan on the PlayStation in 1999, but wasn’t released in North America and Europe until a PSP port in 2011. It's also playable on the PlayStation Vita. The story follows a group of high schoolers in Sumaru City battling a mysterious villain named Joker, whose rumors can alter reality. Currently, there's no version available on modern consoles.
Platforms | PlayStation, PSP, PlayStation Vita, PS3 |
*Eternal Punishment* is the direct sequel to *Innocent Sin*, released in 2000. It follows a teen reporter dealing with the aftermath of the "Joker Curse." Unlike *Innocent Sin*, it saw a simultaneous North American release on PlayStation in 2000. A PSP remake came out in 2011, and it was later made available on the PS3 through the PlayStation Network in 2013. Unfortunately, it's not available on modern hardware, but there's hope for a future remaster.

*Persona 3* marked a pivotal moment for the series, stepping out from the *Shin Megami Tensei* shadow with its 2006 Japanese release and 2007 North American debut on the PlayStation 2. The game explores themes of death and the mysterious "Dark Hour." An enhanced version, *Persona 3 FES*, featuring an additional epilogue, is available on PS3. The series saw further remakes with *Persona 3 Portable*, originally for PSP and later on PS4, Windows, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with physical releases in 2023. The latest, *Persona 3 Reload*, released in 2024, caters to fans of *Persona 5 Royal* and is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows, with physical versions for PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

Platforms (Persona 4 Golden) | PlayStation Vita, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC |
Two years after *Persona 3*, *Persona 4* hit the PlayStation 2 in 2008, presenting a murder mystery where teens harness their personas to solve a series of killings. An enhanced version, *Persona 4 Golden*, was released for the PlayStation Vita in 2012 and later made available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Physical versions are available for all platforms except PC.
Platforms (Persona 5) | PS3, PS4 |
Platforms (Persona 5 Royal) | PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC |
*Persona 4* garnered attention, but *Persona 5* catapulted the series into mainstream gaming culture. Released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in 2016 in Japan and 2017 worldwide, the enhanced *Persona 5 Royal* followed, hitting North America in March 2020 amidst the early stages of the global COVID-19 shutdown. The narrative follows a protagonist, codenamed Joker, who, after being wrongfully accused of assault, moves to Tokyo and becomes embroiled in the world of "palaces," metaphysical realms born from people's delusions. *Persona 5 Royal* is now available on nearly all modern platforms, including PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with both physical and digital options widely accessible.
