In a groundbreaking move, Pokémon will soon release an official encyclopedia authored by leading animal ecologists. Discover what Pokécology is all about and what fans can expect from this exciting new publication.
The Pokémon Company has partnered with Shogakukan, one of Japan’s most respected comic publishers, to produce Pokécology—an authoritative encyclopedia exploring the behaviors and ecological habits of Pokémon. On April 21, Shogakukan officially announced that the book will be released on June 18, 2025 in Japan.
Pre-orders are currently available in major bookstores across the country. The hardcover edition will retail for 1,430 yen (tax included). While no global release has been confirmed yet, considering Pokémon's massive international fanbase, it’s highly likely an English version will follow shortly after.
This groundbreaking encyclopedia will offer an in-depth look at the natural world of Pokémon. From dietary habits and sleep patterns to physical traits and social interactions, Pokécology will explore how Pokémon live, behave, and coexist within their environments.
The project brings together experts from the University of Tokyo, including veterinary behaviorists and doctors specializing in ecology. Leading the research effort is renowned ecologist Yoshinari Yonehara, who served as the primary analyst for wild Pokémon behavior featured in the book. Complementing the scientific insights is illustrator Chihiro Kino, known for her work on numerous wildlife ecology publications, who will provide vivid, full-color illustrations of various Pokémon species.
While Pokémon has previously published comprehensive guides detailing stats, battles, and game strategies, Pokécology marks the franchise’s very first deep dive into the biological and ecological aspects of these beloved creatures. This makes it an invaluable resource for fans of all ages—especially younger readers eager to learn more about the fascinating lives of Pokémon beyond the battlefield.
