Since its launch in 2016, Dead by Daylight has evolved from a simple hide-and-seek game into a phenomenon often dubbed the "Super Smash Bros. of horror." Initially featuring only three killers and four survivors, the game has grown tremendously, now featuring 26 killers and maintaining a strong player base. Dead by Daylight's tutorial offers a solid introduction to the basics, but mastering the intricacies of each killer can be daunting, especially without the ability to practice against bots. As the game continues to expand with new licensed killers and original survivors slated for release in March and April 2025, newcomers have a golden opportunity to familiarize themselves with the roster of killers.
The Demogorgon, a fearsome creature from the sci-fi horror series Stranger Things, was introduced in Dead by Daylight's Chapter 13. Known for its terrifying appearance and ability to cover vast distances, the Demogorgon uses Portals to surprise Survivors. With the Of the Abyss Power, it can sense Survivors near its Portals, allowing for sudden, lethal attacks. Players can strategically place up to six Portals across the map to enhance their chase capabilities, though Survivors can seal them. The Demogorgon's unique Perks, such as Cruel Limits, Mindbreaker, and Surge, further enhance its ability to disrupt Survivor strategies.
The Clown, originally Kenneth Chase, uses his past as a traveling circus member to mask his sinister pursuits. His signature Afterpiece Tonic releases noxious gas, slowing Survivors and impairing their vision, which is perfect for chases. The Clown's Perks, including Bamboozle, Coulrophobia, and Pop Goes The Weasel, complement his chase-oriented playstyle. Mastering the Clown requires understanding when to engage in chases and how to use his Tonics effectively, with Purple Gas Clouds for zoning and Yellow Antidote Bottles for pre-chase preparation.
Albert Wesker, known as The Mastermind, was introduced in Chapter 25: Resident Evil: PROJECT W. His Virulent Bond allows him to perform a charged Bound Attack, which can vault over obstacles or interact with Survivors, infecting them with the Uroboros Virus. This virus eventually leads to a Hindered Status Effect, making Survivors easier to catch. Wesker's Perks, such as Awakened Awareness, Superior Anatomy, and Terminus, reflect his advanced genetics and tactical advantage. Players must leverage his control over distance and timing to maximize his effectiveness.
The Trapper, one of the original killers, remains a popular choice for beginners due to his straightforward mechanics. Evan MacMillan uses bear traps to control the map and hinder Survivors. His ability to set traps strategically, combined with his Agitation Perk, which boosts movement speed while carrying a Survivor, makes him an effective Area Denial Killer. Learning trap placement and utilizing his ability to break through obstacles can significantly enhance gameplay.
Introduced in 2017, Freddy Krueger, known as The Nightmare, brings his iconic dream-stalking abilities to Dead by Daylight. His Dream Demon power allows him to remain visually invisible to Survivors at a distance, making him ideal for beginners looking to ambush their prey. Freddy's Fire Up Perk increases his action speed as generators are completed, and his ability to slow down Exit Gate opening times or even block them temporarily can turn the tide of the game.
Leatherface, or The Cannibal, is a powerful killer for beginners, especially with his Barbeque & Chili Perk, which is versatile across the killer roster. His chainsaw dash can instantly down Survivors, though managing the tantrum meter that can halt his movement is crucial. While effective against new players, Leatherface can struggle against more experienced Survivors who know how to evade his attacks.
The Deathslinger, introduced in the Chains of Hate DLC, offers a unique playstyle reminiscent of FPS games. His harpoon gun allows him to reel in Survivors, inflicting Deep Wounds. While his Perks may not be top-tier, his ability to aim and shoot effectively can be a fun and rewarding challenge for new players, though controller users might find his controls less intuitive.
The Trickster's Showstopper ability allows him to throw blades at Survivors, building their laceration meter until they take damage. His Main Event special enables rapid blade throwing, making him a formidable ranged killer. While his power relies heavily on aim, which can be challenging for controller users, his unique playstyle can be appealing to those who enjoy a more aggressive approach.
The Huntress is a straightforward killer with a simple yet challenging power: throwing hatchets. Her haunting tune and ability to catch Survivors off-guard with her ranged attacks make her a great choice for beginners. However, mastering her requires practice, especially on maps with obstacles that can hinder her aim.
Legion's Feral Frenzy allows them to sprint and chain attacks, inflicting Deep Wounds on Survivors. While easy to learn, Legion struggles to down Survivors directly during Frenzy, requiring players to switch back to normal attacks to finish them off. Their mobility and ability to mark multiple Survivors make them a good choice for beginners looking to understand the game's mechanics.
The Doctor's powers, Static Blast and Shock Therapy, induce Madness in Survivors, making them easier to track and hinder. His ability to disrupt Survivor actions through hallucinations and skill check penalties can be overwhelming for new players, making him a challenging yet rewarding killer to master.
The Pig, inspired by the SAW franchise, uses stealth and surprise attacks to her advantage. Her Ambush Dash and reverse bear traps add a layer of strategy, as players must decide when to use these tools effectively. Her unique playstyle can be tricky but rewarding for those who enjoy tactical gameplay.
The Hillbilly's chainsaw rush can instantly down Survivors and destroy obstacles, though it's challenging to control. While his power is easy to learn, mastering it requires practice, especially for controller users. His straightforward mechanics make him approachable for beginners, but his effectiveness can vary against skilled Survivors.
Michael Myers, or The Shape, is a simple yet strategic killer. His stalking ability builds a meter that, once filled, allows him to down Survivors in one hit. Timing when to activate his tier three power is crucial, making him a late-game threat that can turn the tide of the match.
The Wraith, one of the original killers, is the most beginner-friendly due to his forgiving power. Cloaking with the Wailing Bell allows him to become nearly invisible, perfect for ambushing Survivors. His speed boost upon uncloaking can catch unsuspecting players off-guard, making him a fun and effective choice for newcomers.
