Zenless Zone Zero's gameplay revolves around exploring the Hollows, Ether-corrupted zones teeming with monsters. However, New Eridu's ability to harness Ether has led to a scramble for control and profit, with various factions – government, corporations, and gangs – vying for dominance. This has given rise to Hollow Raiders, individuals seeking fortune within the Hollows' perilous depths.

ZZZ's playable characters are all skilled Hollow Raiders, possessing significant Ether Aptitudes. Players (Proxies) can team up with Agents from diverse backgrounds, including Hollow Raiders, construction firms, private organizations, and even government security personnel.

Initially, characters were categorized by Attack Type, but HoYoverse has since transitioned to a more intuitive Role system. While Attack Types remain visible in character stats, the Role system provides a clearer understanding of each Agent's function within a team.
