With pre-orders selling out and numerous spoilers emerging, Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Final Fantasy collaboration is shaping up to be its most ambitious yet. Today, we're excited to showcase six exclusive cards from the upcoming set: three featuring classic concept art by Yoshitaka Amano, and three showcasing more recent artwork by Toshitaka Matsuda.

Today's revealed cards belong to the "Through the Ages" bonus sheet included in the main set. These are reprints of existing Magic cards reimagined with concept art and characters from various Final Fantasy titles. While they don't introduce new mechanics like recently previewed cards or the Commander decks we've featured, they showcase artwork spanning the entire series, including the very first game.

Unlike main set cards, Through the Ages cards don't automatically become Standard-legal (unless the original card already was). Essentially, they serve as alternate art versions. You can find them in Collector Boosters and in one out of every three regular Play Boosters used for Limited formats like Draft and Sealed.

This means if you frequently play this set at your local game store or digitally on platforms like Magic: The Gathering Arena, you'll encounter these cards often. Five of the six cards featured here are Rares, making them less common drops, but Thrum of the Vestige is an Uncommon. This is a reskinned version of Magic's iconic Lightning Bolt, and this particular printing could significantly influence the set's dynamics.

The Warrior of Light version of Jodah, the Unifier is also poised to be highly sought after. Jodah is both powerful and popular in Commander formats, and this edition features Amano's artwork from the original Final Fantasy's Japanese box art. Similarly, Amano's legendary illustration of Final Fantasy 4's Cecil Harvey now adorns Tymna the Weaver, one of Magic's most potent partner commanders, which has only received one prior reprint.

These cards launch physically with the full Final Fantasy set on June 13, while digital versions become available on MTG Arena and MTGO on June 10. Even if you're a Final Fantasy enthusiast new to Magic, there's reason for excitement: FF7 Remake series director Tetsuya Nomura hinted that Sephiroth's depiction on one card contains deliberate design differences for intriguing reasons.
