Assassin's Creed Shadows: Deep Dive into Progression and Customization

Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) offers players extensive character progression and customization options, including a highly anticipated transmogging feature. This allows players to maintain desired weapon stats while altering their cosmetic appearance. A recent March 1st, 2025, blog post detailed these features, shedding light on the game's design philosophy.

The game's transmog system lets players decouple weapon stats from their visual appearance. Players can retain powerful stats while equipping a visually preferred look. This functionality is unlocked by constructing a Forge in the Hideout, accessible afterward through the inventory menu. Associate Game Director Julien highlighted the Forge's broader role in inventory management, hinting at further details in a future article about the Hideout. Furthermore, players can creatively combine weapon components – blade from one, guard from another, and handle from a third – resulting in unique aesthetic combinations.

Building upon previous reveals at IGN Fan Fest 2025, Ubisoft provided a deeper look into AC Shadows' progression mechanics. The dual protagonist structure – Naoe (shinobi/assassin) and Yasuke (samurai) – prompted a re-evaluation of the progression system. The goal was to maintain the core philosophy of mastery and martial arts.

Separate mastery trees for Naoe and Yasuke cater to their respective archetypes. Investing in these trees unlocks weapon-specific bonuses and enhances mastery. Abilities, granting gameplay advantages and increased damage, are also tied to the mastery trees. However, access to certain abilities and mastery points is gated by the player's Knowledge Rank, increased through non-combat activities like finding Lost Pages, praying at Shrines, performing Kuji-kiri Meditation (Naoe), or learning new Kata (Yasuke).

AC Shadows allows for significant playstyle customization. Perks modify, enhance, or specialize equipment, offering stat boosts, affliction influences, and conditional effects that encourage diverse gameplay approaches. While Naoe and Yasuke begin with distinct archetypes, players can deviate significantly. Example builds illustrate this flexibility: Naoe can be built for aggressive, high-damage ground combat with quick engagement/disengagement, while Yasuke can be tailored for stealth and ranged attacks.
With its extensive customization and deep progression system, AC Shadows promises a highly replayable experience. The game launches March 20, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates!
