Black Myth: Wukong Xbox Release Set for August 20

by Henry Nov 19,2025

Black Myth: Wukong, the action RPG based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, is finally launching on Xbox Series X/S on August 20, 2025—exactly one year after its release on PS5 and PC.

Xbox announced the news on Twitter/X, stating, "You are the Destined One. Black Myth: Wukong arrives August 20. Pre-orders start June 18!"

Black Myth: Wukong has been a massive success, selling more than 25 million copies as of January 31, 2025. Still, its absence on Xbox Series X/S has always been conspicuous, especially since it was never marketed as an exclusive title.

Some sources attributed the delay to a Sony exclusivity arrangement rather than technical challenges, though Fen Ji, head of Game Science (the developer behind Black Myth: Wukong), reportedly pointed to the Xbox Series S as the main obstacle.

"The only thing missing is the Xbox," he was quoted as saying, via machine translation, "which somehow feels a bit odd, but that 10GB of shared memory—without years of optimization expertise—is really difficult to get running smoothly."

Now, it seems those hurdles have been cleared, and Xbox players will soon be able to add the title to their collections.

In our review of Black Myth: Wukong, we noted, "Despite some annoying technical problems, Black Myth: Wukong is an outstanding action game with superb combat, thrilling bosses, intriguing secrets, and a gorgeous world."

Black Myth: Wukong has also faced controversy beyond technical performance—we previously reported on the developer's history of sexism back in 2023.
