Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 Fatality, Future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1

by Nova May 08,2025

Ed Boon, the development chief of Mortal Kombat 1, recently shared a sneak peek of the upcoming guest character T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, sparking excitement among fans. Alongside this reveal, Boon announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, an increase from the previously reported four million, coinciding with the release of guest character Conan the Barbarian.

The teaser video showcased one of T-1000’s Fatalities, where the character drives a smashed truck into his opponent, reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from Terminator 2. This nostalgic nod to the film franchise has thrilled Terminator fans and Mortal Kombat enthusiasts alike.

Boon's tweet also hinted at future content, stating, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" This comment has fueled speculation within the Mortal Kombat community about the possibility of additional DLC characters beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion, which includes T-1000 as its final character alongside Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian.

Amidst questions about the game's sales performance and the future of DLC, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, has expressed strong continued support for the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav indicated that the company plans to focus heavily on just four titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them.

Boon has previously committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 "for a long time to come," despite revealing that NetherRealm had decided on its next game three years prior. Speculation is rife that this next game could be the third installment in the Injustice series, following Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013) and Injustice 2 (2017). However, neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this.

In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon discussed the decision to release Mortal Kombat 1 instead of an Injustice game, citing factors such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Mortal Kombat 11 used Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 utilizes Unreal Engine 4. Boon emphasized the studio's commitment to safety during the pandemic and their desire to explore new graphics capabilities with the updated engine.

When asked directly about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon reassured fans that the door is "not at all" closed on the series, leaving room for potential future developments.
