Where Was the Hulk?
Marvel finally delivered a sequel to The Incredible Hulk, resolving some plot points from the original film. However, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner is conspicuously absent. His absence is particularly puzzling given the direct connection to the events of The Incredible Hulk and his established role in monitoring global threats. While a plausible explanation might be offered later, his omission creates a significant plot hole.
The Leader's Underwhelming Strategy
Tim Blake Nelson's Samuel Sterns, now The Leader, lacks the strategic brilliance expected of a mastermind villain. His plan seems poorly conceived, neglecting key variables like Captain America's intervention and culminating in a surprisingly simple act of revealing a recorded phone call. His motivations are also limited to personal animosity toward President Ross, failing to reflect the world-threatening ambition of his comic book counterpart.
Red Hulk's Lack of Tactical Prowess
President Ross' transformation into Red Hulk mirrors the mindless rage of the original Hulk, lacking the intelligence and tactical expertise depicted in the comics. While the irony of Ross becoming what he hated is appreciated, the missed opportunity to portray a different Hulk archetype is disappointing.
Inconsistent Weapon Effectiveness
Red Hulk's invulnerability to bullets is contradicted by Captain America's ability to injure him with vibranium blades. While vibranium's superior properties likely explain this discrepancy, it raises questions about the relative strength of different materials in the MCU.
Bucky's Unexpected Political Career
Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes' sudden political aspirations are jarring and lack any prior indication in his previous appearances. His history makes his candidacy seem improbable, raising questions about his motivations and the plausibility of his campaign.
Sidewinder's Unexplained Grudge
Giancarlo Esposito's Sidewinder harbors a personal vendetta against Captain America that remains unexplained. This unresolved conflict, potentially affected by reshoots, suggests a missing narrative element that may be addressed in future installments.
Sabra's Underutilized Role
Shira Haas' Ruth Bat-Seraph, a character adapted from the comics, feels underutilized. Her role as a minor obstacle turned ally lacks depth, raising questions about the necessity of adapting the Sabra character and the impact of reshoots on her storyline.
Adamantium's Significance
The introduction of adamantium as a MacGuffin driving the plot raises questions about its future impact on the MCU. While its connection to Wolverine is clear, its overall significance and long-term consequences remain uncertain.
The Absence of the Avengers
The film's lack of focus on assembling a new Avengers team is striking, given the years that have passed since Endgame. The movie only hints at the need for a new team, leaving the actual formation for future installments. The final battle could have benefited significantly from the inclusion of other Avengers.
