The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a long-awaited feature that fans have been requesting for over a decade: subclasses. This exciting addition promises to enrich the gameplay experience by allowing players to customize their characters in unprecedented ways. Dive in to discover how this new system works and what's on the horizon for ESO's future updates.
As part of its 10th Anniversary celebration, Zenimax Online Studios unveiled a wealth of new content during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. Among the announcements, the introduction of subclassing stood out as a major highlight. For years, ESO players have voiced their desire for more flexibility in class choices without the need to start over. The new subclass system addresses this by allowing players to mix and match skill lines from different classes.
To utilize subclasses, players must first reach level 50. Once achieved, they can retain one skill line from their original class and swap out two others with any of the skill lines from the six available classes. This innovative approach results in over 3000 possible combinations, empowering players to tailor their characters to their preferred playstyle.
ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new feature, stating that extensive testing has been conducted. Despite potential concerns about increased power levels, Lambert assures that the team is satisfied with the current balance.
In a shift towards seasonal content, Zenimax Online aims to experiment more freely with storytelling and gameplay mechanics. Studio Director Matt Firor explained that this new approach will allow the developers to explore a broader range of content and respond more effectively to player feedback.
The upcoming chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," marks a significant milestone as a 10-year sequel to the original Molag Bal storyline. Set in the new zone of the Isle of Solstice, players will delve into the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while this season will span most of the year, future seasons are planned to last between 3 to 6 months. The developers also plan to revisit past storylines, with a teased Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
ESO took to Twitter (X) on April 11 to announce the launch of a new content pass and premium edition, encompassing both past and future content releases. Here's what you can expect from the pass:
Both the Content Pass and Premium Edition include exclusive collectibles:
Additionally, unique rewards will be unlocked with the release of Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1 in June.
For a limited time, ESO is offering Early Purchase rewards, including the Mages Guild Recall customized action, available until May 7. Other rewards include:
These rewards are available until June 2 for PC and June 18 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
The Premium Edition also grants access to all previous ESO Chapters (from Morrowind to Gold Road) and all previous Classes (including base-game classes and the Warden, Necromancer, and Arcanist).
With its 10th anniversary celebrations, ESO is set to expand its rich narrative and engage its supportive community further. By revisiting past storylines, the game aims to complete unfinished arcs and deepen its lore. The Elder Scrolls Online is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
