Mass Effect 5 Graphics Won't Be Like Veilguard or Pixar

Mass Effect enthusiasts worried about BioWare's approach to the franchise's next game—especially given the reception of Veilguard's new stylistic elements—can rest assured. Mass Effect 5's project director has addressed their concerns.

Mass Effect's Mature Tone Persists in Mass Effect 5Mass Effect's Next Game Will Remain Photorealistic and Mature

EA and BioWare's next Mass Effect installment, currently called "Mass Effect 5," will retain the mature tone of the Mass Effect trilogy. Mass Effect garnered critical acclaim for its realistic visuals and compelling storytelling tackling mature themes, all underpinned by a deep "level of intensity and cinematic power," as trilogy game director Casey Hudson described it.

Given the established branding of the sci-fi series, Mass Effect 5's project director and executive producer Michael Gamble recently used Twitter (X) to address questions about the upcoming game, particularly given BioWare's latest Dragon Age title, Dragon Age: Veilguard, launching tomorrow, October 31.

A primary concern regarding Mass Effect 5 involves Veilguard's perceived tonal divergence from previous Dragon Age entries. Essentially, fans feel BioWare has adopted a Disney or Pixar-esque visual style.

Addressing fan concerns, Michael Gamble confirmed Veilguard's stylistic choices won't influence Mass Effect 5. "Both are from the studio, but Mass Effect is Mass Effect. How you bring a Sci Fi RPG to life is different than other genres or IPs...and has to have different kinds of love," Gamble stated, adding in a separate tweet that "Mass Effect will maintain the mature tone of the original Trilogy. This is all I'm gonna say for now."

In recent tweets, Gamble also shared his perspective on BioWare's new Dragon Age direction, expressing uncertainty about the "Pixar thing," and confirming Mass Effect will remain photorealistic and "will be as long as i'm running it," he added. While further Mass Effect details weren't revealed, fans shouldn't anticipate the next military sci-fi installment deviating from its visual style.

With N7 Day, aka Mass Effect Day, right around the corner, fans have wondered if there is "a chance of setting expectations for N7 day," as one fan inquired of Gamble on social media. Every year on November 7, BioWare has made significant announcements regarding Mass Effect. In 2020, the Mass Effect community was especially thrilled as the studio revealed the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition trilogy remaster pack.

On Mass Effect 5 specifically, fans received a series of enigmatic posts during last year's N7 Day. The string of enigmatic posts ignited excitement among Mass Effect fans, hinting at the upcoming title's narrative, potential character returns, and even the game’s working title. The clips feature a mysterious character wearing a full-face helmet and suit with an N7 logo print.

The previews culminated in the release of a full 34-second clip, and aside from these preview clips, nothing substantial has been shared regarding Mass Effect 5 so far, but we're holding out hope for some form of new preview or significant announcement to be made during N7 Day 2024.
