Amazon is canceling pre-orders for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and notifying customers via email. Here's what this means for the game's future and whether it will impact the planned 2025 release.

On January 11, 2025, multiple users on Reddit, Resetera, and other online forums reported Amazon canceling their Metroid Prime 4 pre-orders.
Screenshots shared by customers show that Amazon contacted them to cancel pre-orders due to "lack of availability." Despite the cancellation, Amazon assured refunds for reservation charges within 1–2 business days.

Many longtime Metroid fans expressed disappointment, particularly those who placed orders back when the game was first announced at E3 2017. This cancellation doesn’t mean the game has been canceled—only that it is no longer available for pre-order on Amazon.

Metroid Prime 4 was first revealed during E3 2017. At the time, Nintendo's director of product marketing clarified that Retro Studios, the team behind previous Metroid Prime titles, was not involved. Nintendo did not initially reveal which studio was handling development.
Two years after the announcement, Nintendo confirmed that development had been restarted under Retro Studios. In a January 2019 YouTube update, Senior Managing Executive Officer Shinya Takahashi explained that progress "had not reached the standards we seek in a sequel to the Metroid Prime series."

In June 2024, Nintendo concluded its Direct presentation with a full gameplay trailer for Metroid Prime 4, now subtitled Beyond, and announced a 2025 release window. The trailer introduced the villain Sylux, who leads a group of Space Pirates inside an unidentified facility.
More recently, on January 3, 2025, Nintendo reaffirmed the 2025 release window for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in an official news post. Although Amazon’s cancellation has caused concern among fans, the post confirms the game is still on track for a 2025 launch.
With the Switch 2 announcement expected soon, it remains to be seen whether the game will launch on the original Switch or its successor.
