Visual fidelity was never a core focus in Minecraft's design. Mojang's iconic blocky aesthetics took a backseat to the game's infinite sandbox potential and boundless creative freedom.

Today marks a turning point with the release of Minecraft's highly anticipated Vibrant Visuals update for PC and select consoles and mobile devices. However, some platforms will miss out - including the legacy Java Edition and certain older hardware.

Players using Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Series X/S, or supported Android/iOS devices can access Vibrant Visuals immediately through the broader Chase the Skies update.

The Chase the Skies expansion introduces several gameplay enhancements. Players can now tame and ride peaceful Happy Ghasts - a welcome contrast to their Nether-dwelling counterparts that fire destructive projectiles. New caravan mechanics allow chaining camels together for resource transport, while a Player Locator HUD helps track friends more efficiently.

Owners of older consoles (PS4/Xbox One) or lower-end Android devices must enable Vibrant Visuals manually in the video settings, with Mojang cautioning about potential performance impacts.

Minimum requirements for optimal experience:

  • Android: Adreno 640, Mali-G68/G77, or Xclipse 530+ GPU
  • iOS: A12 Bionic or M1+ chipset
  • PC: DirectX 12 compatibility

Current limitations include no splitscreen support, and incompatibility with custom Worlds/Texture Packs. Notably absent is any mention of Nintendo Switch support, leaving Switch players uncertain about future availability.

In positive news, Minecraft now officially supports Xbox Series X/S optimization - a significant milestone five years into Microsoft's current console generation.

This update fulfills Microsoft's 2017 promise for graphical enhancements, originally showcased in the cancelled Super Duper Graphics Pack demo targeted at Xbox One and the then-upcoming Xbox One X.
