Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch

The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a challenging launch, marked by widespread server issues, bugs, and instability. Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed player concerns in a YouTube video.

Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers

Neumann and Wloch explained that while they anticipated high player interest, the actual volume significantly exceeded their projections, overwhelming the game's infrastructure. The initial login process involves servers retrieving data from a database with a limited cache. While tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far surpassed this, causing the system to buckle under the strain.

Login Queues, Missing Content, and Negative Steam Reviews

Attempts to mitigate the problem by increasing queue size and speed proved temporary. The database cache repeatedly collapsed, resulting in extended loading times and the infamous "97% loading screen freeze." This, in turn, led to reports of missing aircraft and other game content. Wloch attributed these issues to the server's inability to handle the influx of requests, leading to incomplete data delivery.

The game's reception on Steam reflects these challenges, with a "Mostly Negative" rating due to widespread reports of long queues and missing assets.

Despite the setbacks, the development team assures players they are actively working to resolve the issues, implementing solutions to stabilize the servers and improve the player experience. A statement on the Steam page indicates progress in addressing the problems, and apologies for the inconvenience have been issued. The team continues to monitor the situation and provide updates through various channels.
