Live-Action Zelda Film Date Set via Nintendo App

by Jack Dec 31,2025

Nintendo has confirmed that the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will premiere on March 26, 2027.

This confirmation comes via the newly launched Nintendo Today! app, introduced during the March 2025 Nintendo Direct, though no additional movie details were provided.

Iconic game developer Shigeru Miyamoto revealed this news as a final surprise during the presentation. The all-in-one phone app offers a range of features designed for dedicated Nintendo fans.

This central hub for Nintendo serves as a daily calendar and news source, delivering information directly to players as it happens. Miyamoto gave the example that following next week's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans can log into the app to access all updates, with more news arriving "daily" thereafter.

The big announcements have started early, with the Zelda movie release date sure to drive many fans to download the app for similar major updates. It's notable that Nintendo's news app broke the Zelda movie news ahead of the company's own social media channels.

Nintendo and Sony Pictures first announced the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in November 2023, with Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) set to direct and Avi Arad and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto producing.

Very little is known about the movie itself. Ball has said he envisions it as "live action Miyazaki," referencing acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and creator of classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. Ball also plans for the Zelda movie to be a "serious" adaptation with a realistic feel and has clarified that he intends to use minimal motion capture for this "grounded" film.
