Nintendo Cautions on Switch 2 Overheating in Heat

by Natalie Jan 17,2026

Nintendo advises Switch 2 owners to exercise caution when playing outdoors during hot summer weather.

In a post from its Japanese customer service social media account, the company reminded users that the Switch 2 is designed to function within an ambient temperature range of 5 to 35 degrees Celsius.

"Recent temperatures have surpassed 35°C," Nintendo stated. "Please be careful when using the console outside."

Nintendo issued a similar warning for the original Switch in July 2022 during a heatwave. At that time, the company recommended users check the console's intake and exhaust vents to ensure they were not obstructed, as blockages could lead to overheating.

Currently, an extreme heat warning is active for the Tokyo area in Japan, with forecasts predicting temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius for tomorrow, August 5th.

"Using a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 in a high-temperature environment may cause the device to become hot," Nintendo wrote this month. "This could lead to performance issues, so please use it within the 5–35°C range."

In short, if you're heading outside, keep the sunlight in mind. Or, take this as a suggestion to stay indoors, draw the curtains, and enjoy more Donkey Kong Bananza. That's certainly been my approach.
