Stellar Blade PC adds Denuvo DRM, region lock

Stellar Blade PC Version to Feature Denuvo and Regional Restrictions

Stellar Blade is preparing for its PC launch with numerous enhancements, though similar to other Sony-published titles, it will face regional limitations. Discover the bonus content and potential implications for regions without PSN availability.

Stellar Blade's PC Release: The Highlights and Challenges

The Positive: Free Content Upgrade Coming to PS5 Version

Shift Up's action RPG Stellar Blade is expanding to PC with significant upgrades. However, its transition hasn't been without hurdles, including Sony accidentally leaking the game's trailer before the official announcement and unexpected regional restrictions that surprised even the development team.

PlayStation 5 players will receive a complimentary update introducing all the new content featured in the PC release. Shift Up's technical director DongKi Lee outlined the improvements coming to both platforms, including:

  • NVIDIA DLSS 4 and AMD FSR 3 upscaling support
  • Uncapped frame rates exceeding 120 FPS
  • Ultra-wide support (5:4 to 32:9 aspect ratios)
  • Enhanced texture resolution
  • Full keyboard/mouse customization
  • DualSense controller support with haptic feedback
  • Additional Japanese and Chinese voiceover options

The PC edition introduces new gameplay elements like a boss fight against Mann (leader of the Sentinels) and 25 additional outfits for protagonist Eve. PlayStation 5 owners will receive this content through a free update launching simultaneously.

The Concerns: Regional Blocks and Controversial DRM Implementation

Stellar Blade Regional Restrictions Map

While PS5 players enjoy additional content, the PC version's launch faces complications from geographical limitations and Denuvo integration. SteamDB data reveals the game is currently unavailable in over 100 territories.

Although Shift Up confirmed PSN account linking isn't required, the blocked regions largely coincide with areas without PSN services. This has led many to speculate about Sony's involvement in these restrictions.

The situation appears to mirror previous controversies surrounding Sony's PC releases, particularly the Helldivers 2 PSN requirement backlash that resulted in review bombing before Sony reversed its policy.

The studio's social media response suggests they may have been unaware of these restrictions. When questioned about regional availability, the official account responded with apparent surprise: "The PC version doesn't require PSN. Where are you located?" accompanied by a shocked emoji.

Additionally, player concerns regarding Denuvo's potential performance impact have been addressed by the development team. Through rigorous optimization, they've confirmed stable performance across various hardware configurations, including 45-50 FPS on Steam Deck with proper settings.
