Iroha Uta Quiz App – Discover the Second Half of the Classic Japanese Poem

This quiz app is dedicated to testing your knowledge of the famous Japanese poem "Iroha Uta" (The Iroha Song), a timeless piece rich in linguistic and cultural heritage. The phrase "Iroha Uta" translates to a poetic verse that reads: "Iroha ni hana makura, Kono miyako wa..." — often interpreted as “The world of flowers are but a shallow dream” or metaphorically referring to the transient nature of life.

Known historically as "Iroha Karuta," this poetic form was created in Kyoto during the Edo period and later spread throughout Japan, including Osaka, Nagoya, and Edo (now Tokyo). Each line of the poem uses every kana character exactly once—47 characters from the traditional hiragana syllabary (including the now-archaic "ye" sound, making it 48 in total). These lines were also used as phrase tags in traditional karuta card games, especially in competitive regional variations such as the Tokyo-style version featured in this app.
