Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, launches February 14th. This RPG-infused title introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour system and character design.
The game features two playable characters with distinct styles: the stealthy shinobi Naoe, and the powerful samurai Yasuke, who cannot climb. This dual protagonist approach aims to appeal to both stealth and combat-focused players, blending classic Assassin's Creed gameplay with the open combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.
A New Approach to Parkour:
Ubisoft has significantly overhauled the parkour mechanics. Gone is the free-for-all climbing of previous installments; Shadows introduces designated "parkour highways." While this might seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most surfaces remain climbable, requiring a more strategic approach. These pathways are carefully designed for optimal flow.
The blog post by Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois highlights seamless ledge dismounts, replacing the need to grab ledges. Players can now stylishly perform flips while descending. A new prone position allows for sprinting dives and slides, enhancing fluidity.
Lemay-Comtois explains, "...we needed to thoughtfully design interesting parkour highways, controlling Naoe's movement and Yasuke's limitations...Most areas remain climbable, especially with the grappling hook, but players will need to identify valid entry points."
A Crowded February Launch:
Assassin's Creed Shadows arrives on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th. With its unique setting, revamped parkour, and dual protagonists, it faces stiff competition from other major releases like Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. The coming weeks will reveal more about this highly anticipated title.
