Hulu may be ready to stake a claim in the vampire-hunting world. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is nearing fruition at Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding to the excitement, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows allegations of a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as a key element.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. Her allies included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The franchise continued through a series of comic books following the TV series and its spin-off, Angel.
