At the outset of *Citizen Sleeper 2*, you'll be faced with a choice among three distinct classes: Operator, Machinist, and Extractor. This decision is pivotal, as it shapes your gameplay experience based on your preferred style. After completing the game, here's a detailed look at each class, their unique abilities, and who might enjoy them from a role-playing standpoint.
The Operator class begins with a + in Interface, alongside base levels in Intuit and Engage, but no points in Engineer. Notably, they cannot level up Endure. Their unique ability allows them to gain Stress in exchange for re-rolling their lowest dice, which can be a double-edged sword. While I appreciate the Operator's versatility, it wasn't my top choice due to early game challenges. Interface is a valuable skill, and with upgrades, the Operator becomes quite powerful. However, the re-rolling mechanic can sometimes leave you with a poor outcome, which is less than ideal.
From a role-playing perspective, the Operator is a flexible class, perfect for players who wish to embody any character archetype.
The Machinist starts with a + in Engineer, and base levels in Interface and Intuit, but no Endure. They cannot level up Engage. Their ability lets them gain Stress to add +2 to their lowest dice, and they lose 2 Stress on a Positive outcome. As *Citizen Sleeper 2* progresses, they can further enhance their dice and manage Stress more effectively. My first playthrough with the Machinist was my favorite. The ability to mitigate Stress and tackle Engineer and Interface checks, which are common, made it invaluable. The Stress reduction feature is particularly helpful, given the game's challenging Stress mechanic.
From a role-playing perspective, those intrigued by the game's technical and mechanical elements would find the Machinist class in *Citizen Sleeper 2* appealing.
The Extractor class starts with a + in Endure, and base levels in Engineer and Engage, but no Interface. They cannot level up Intuit. Their ability allows them to gain Stress to add +2 to the lowest dice of their crew, which becomes more potent as the game progresses. I found the Extractor's ability to be highly beneficial, especially when managing crew during Contracts. Starting with a bonus in Endure is advantageous, considering how often it's required. However, I often found myself with crew members who already excelled in Endure and Engage.
From a role-playing perspective, if you're aiming to play a more rugged, combat-focused character, the Extractor in *Citizen Sleeper 2* is the way to go.
This guide aims to help you decide which class to choose in *Citizen Sleeper 2*, based on both gameplay mechanics and role-playing preferences.
