Sony's shrewd move to secure GTA exclusivity for the PS2, fueled by the looming threat of the Xbox, proved a masterstroke. This article delves into the strategic reasoning behind this decision and its impact on the PS2's success.
Chris Deering, former CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, revealed in a GamesIndustry.biz interview that the PS2's GTA exclusivity was a direct response to the impending Xbox launch. Facing the potential for Microsoft to secure similar deals, Sony proactively approached third-party developers and publishers, offering lucrative contracts for two-year console exclusivity. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' parent company, accepted, resulting in GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas becoming PS2 exclusives.
Deering admitted to initial anxieties about the risk, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding GTA III's potential success, given the shift to a 3D format from the earlier top-down titles. However, the strategy proved incredibly successful, significantly contributing to the PS2's status as the best-selling console of all time. Deering highlighted the mutual benefit: "It was very lucky for us. And actually lucky for them, because they got a discount on the royalty they paid."
GTA III's groundbreaking transition to 3D redefined the open-world genre. Rockstar co-founder, Jaime King, stated in a November 2021 GamesIndustry.biz interview that the company had long envisioned a 3D GTA, waiting only for the technological capability. The PS2 provided the platform to realize this vision, launching a new era for the franchise. Despite the PS2's technical limitations, the three exclusive GTA titles became some of the console's best-selling games.
The ongoing mystery surrounding GTA VI, despite only a single trailer, keeps the GTA community vibrant and engaged, a testament to Rockstar's shrewd marketing approach.
