Six years after Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania hit Hollow Knight, fans are buzzing with speculation. The game's absence from various showcases, including The Game Awards, has fueled intense anticipation. Now, a cryptic social media post has ignited a firestorm of theories.
The mystery began on January 15th when Team Cherry co-director William Pellen updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. He accompanied the image with the tweet: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow." Given the rumored January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, many connected the dots.
The intrigue deepened when fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it back to a Bon Appétit recipe published on April 2nd, 2024. Coincidentally, Nintendo announced a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. This led to the widespread belief that Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) to tease Silksong's release.
The speculation extends to Pellen's new Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, and his name change to "little bomey." Fans are actively deciphering these clues, with theories ranging from connections to Silksong NPCs to references to Australian wines (Team Cherry's location).
While the original announcement listed Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch as launch platforms, six years have passed. The possibility of Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, or a timed exclusive, is fueling the excitement. Whether this is a cleverly orchestrated ARG or simply overzealous fan speculation remains to be seen.
We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, the Hollow Knight community continues its fervent investigation, and the mystery of the cake persists.
