Nintendo Switch 2's GameChat Feature Will Mandate Phone Verification
The video calling functionality comes pre-installed on all Nintendo Switch 2 units and serves as a flagship feature of the next-generation console.
Potential users should note that GameChat activation requires identity verification through phone number submission (or using the number already linked to your Nintendo Account).
Nintendo will authenticate accounts via text message, associating GameChat usage with the provided number. Users should maintain appropriate conduct accordingly.
Players under 16 must have parental approval through the Parental Controls app before using GameChat, with guardians required to provide their own phone number for verification.
Nintendo's official documentation suggests this verification applies universally across Nintendo Accounts accessing Switch 2 devices, including shared consoles. IGN has requested official clarification from Nintendo.
The feature becomes instantly accessible during Switch 2 gameplay via the new 'C' button across all controllers, supporting video chats for up to four participants or group audio calls accommodating 24 users.
Video calls can incorporate external camera peripherals (sold separately) and enable gameplay streaming - marking Nintendo's first venture into such services after historically trailing competitors in online functionality.

Digital Foundry's recent technical analysis revealed GameChat's substantial system resource demands, raising developer concerns about performance impacts.
Nintendo provides development tools simulating GameChat's API latency and L3 cache effects, allowing testing without actual calls - hinting at potential performance considerations.
Digital Foundry notes developers can evaluate whether GameChat activation affects gameplay performance, though definitive answers await the June 5 launch.
As emphasized previously, GameChat remains complimentary for the first 10 months post-launch, transitioning to Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement after March 31, 2026.
Recent developments include the first authenticated glimpse at Switch 2 game cartridges and reports of Samsung pursuing OLED display supply contracts for potential hardware revisions.
