Sony is dropping the PlayStation Network (PSN) account linking requirement for several PC games, starting with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This follows player feedback regarding the previous mandatory linking. Games affected include Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. The impact on other single-player PC titles remains unclear.
However, Sony isn't abandoning its online ecosystem entirely. Players who do link their PSN accounts will receive in-game bonuses. These include early suit unlocks in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and resource bundles for games like God of War Ragnarök.
Here's a summary of the announced PC incentives:
Sony plans to continue adding benefits for PSN account linking across PlayStation Studios titles. While trophy support and friend management remain benefits of linking, the future of PSN account requirements for other PC games is yet to be determined.
The reception to Sony's PC game releases has been mixed. While many appreciate the wider availability of previously console-exclusive titles, the PSN requirement drew criticism, particularly in regions where PSN isn't accessible. This was notably highlighted by the brief, and later reversed, PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 on Steam.
