11 bit studios has unveiled *Frostpunk 1886*, a full remake of its critically acclaimed original title, set to release in 2027. The Polish game developer is leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5 for this ambitious project, revealed just over six months after the launch of *Frostpunk 2*. Considering the first *Frostpunk* debuted in 2018, the remake will arrive almost a decade after the franchise’s debut—marking a significant evolution in both technology and design.
*Frostpunk* is a deeply immersive city-building survival game set in an alternate version of the late 19th century. Players are tasked with constructing and sustaining a city amid a global volcanic winter, balancing resource management, moral dilemmas, and exploration beyond their urban borders to locate survivors and vital materials.
IGN awarded the original *Frostpunk* a stellar 9/10, praising it as “an engaging and unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game” that masterfully blends thematic depth with compelling gameplay mechanics.
*Frostpunk 2* received a solid 8/10 from IGN, described as “less intimate but more socially and politically complex than the original.” The sequel reimagined the ice-age city-builder formula on a larger scale, expanding the narrative and mechanical scope of the series.
Despite diving into the development of *Frostpunk 1886*, 11 bit studios affirmed its ongoing commitment to *Frostpunk 2*, including future DLC releases and plans for a console launch. The decision to rebuild the first game comes after the discontinuation of the studio's proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered both the original *Frostpunk* and *This War of Mine*. According to the developers, a modern engine was necessary to carry forward the legacy of the franchise while unlocking new creative possibilities.
“While *Frostpunk 2* continues to expand with free updates, console versions, and DLCs, *Frostpunk 1886* represents a return to the roots of the series,” said 11 bit studios. “It offers both newcomers and veteran players an evolved experience rooted in the morally challenging survival gameplay that launched the franchise.”
Titled *Frostpunk 1886* in honor of a key turning point in the universe—the moment the Great Storm engulfed New London—the remake goes beyond a visual refresh. It introduces new content, mechanics, laws, and most notably, a brand-new Purpose path, delivering a fresh challenge even for seasoned players.
Rebuilding *Frostpunk* using Unreal Engine 5 not only enhances the visual fidelity but also transforms the game into a flexible, mod-friendly platform. This opens the door to long-awaited community features like mod support and future DLC expansions—previously unattainable due to technical limitations of the original engine.
According to 11 bit studios, fans can look forward to a dual-path future where *Frostpunk 2* and *Frostpunk 1886* evolve simultaneously—two distinct experiences shaped in parallel, each exploring the relentless struggle for survival in a frozen world.
In addition to *Frostpunk 1886*, the studio is currently developing *The Alters*, scheduled for release in June—a new sci-fi narrative-driven title that further showcases the team’s storytelling prowess and innovative design philosophy.
