VOID Interactive has addressed player concerns following modifications to the PC version of its controversial shooter Ready or Not to enable a console release, clarifying what it calls "misconceptions and misinformation" about the updates.
On July 2, we reported that VOID adjusted elements like gore, nudity, violence, and the depiction of child mistreatment to meet requirements for the July 15 console launch. To avoid maintaining separate versions with different assets and mechanics, which could lead to bugs, the PC version was also updated.
VOID initially described the changes as minor, stating they were subtle enough to go unnoticed by most players if not disclosed, emphasizing its commitment to transparency. However, the updates led to a wave of negative Steam reviews, with Ready or Not’s recent user rating dropping to "mostly negative," though its overall rating remains "very positive." Many negative reviews cite concerns over "censorship."
In a new statement, VOID provided detailed insight into the changes, including before-and-after screenshots, asserting that "the intensity of gore and violence remains unchanged."
"We recently announced minor content tweaks to Ready or Not’s PC version to ensure stability and compliance with global platform policies and age rating requirements," the statement explained. "These changes were necessary for a seamless global release across platforms while preserving the game’s core tone, themes, and intensity."
"We’ve noticed some confusion and misinformation about the extent of these updates. To provide clarity, we’re sharing before-and-after visuals to demonstrate that the game’s atmosphere, tone, and visual impact remain fully intact. The gore and violence, central to the game’s realistic immersion, have not been diminished," VOID added.
VOID confirmed that key missions, including Elephant, Neon Tomb, and Valley of the Dolls, remain unaltered, underscoring its commitment to creative freedom and delivering boundary-pushing experiences for immersion and realism. "This will not change," the studio affirmed.
"At the same time, we must navigate a global landscape of platform standards, age rating boards, and local regulations," VOID noted. "While we may not always agree with how certain content is handled, we’ve only made strictly necessary adjustments to meet regulations—no more. As a hyper-realistic tactical FPS, Ready or Not faces unique scrutiny compared to more stylized or fictional games. This reflects the realities of the publishing landscape, not a shift in our creative vision or values."
