Space Marine 2 Dev Denies Live Service Claims Amid FOMO Uproar

by Logan Apr 06,2026

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's developer and publisher have clarified they aren't pushing the game toward becoming a fully live-service title, following backlash over community events accused of fostering "FOMO" (Fear of Missing Out).

FOMO is a common strategy in live-service games, pressuring players to engage quickly and purchase time-limited virtual items before they disappear. This approach faces criticism for fostering unhealthy player-game dynamics. A 2021 UK GambleAware study revealed many games employ psychological tactics like FOMO to drive loot box purchases—though Space Marine 2 notably excludes such mechanics.

Despite this, recent community events offering exclusive cosmetics have drawn comparisons to live-service models. In response, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive acknowledged player concerns: "We've observed negative feedback regarding event-driven FOMO. However, Space Marine 2 isn't transitioning to live-service—all event items will eventually become available to all players."

The studios confirmed upcoming adjustments: "We're simplifying event item unlocks to reduce frustration. As goodwill, we're granting the emblem-free Mk VIII Errant Helmet—previously requiring Operations Mode achievements—to all PROS-linked accounts."

With Update 7.0 poised to introduce new weapons, maps, and PvE progression, Space Marine 2 maintains momentum after its record-breaking 5-million-copy launch last year.
