Conway's Game of Life

Conway's Game of Life is a cellular automaton devised by the British mathematician John Conway in 1970. It is played on an infinite two-dimensional grid consisting of square cells, each of which can be in one of two states: alive or dead. The state of each cell evolves over time based on a simple set of rules that take into account the states of its eight neighboring cells—those adjacent horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

The evolution of the system occurs in discrete time steps known as generations. Starting from an initial configuration (the first generation), the rules are applied simultaneously to every cell to determine the next generation. This simultaneous update ensures that births and deaths occur at the same time across the board, maintaining consistency in each transition between generations.

The core rules governing the state transitions are as follows:

• A live cell remains alive if it has two or three live neighbors.
• A dead cell becomes alive (is born) if it has exactly three live neighbors.

These rules may seem deceptively simple, yet they give rise to surprisingly complex patterns and behaviors. Many alternative rule sets were explored by Conway before finalizing this version. Some alternate rules cause populations to die out rapidly, while others lead to uncontrolled growth. The chosen rules sit near a critical threshold between these extremes—creating the perfect conditions for rich, dynamic, and unpredictable behavior.

It is precisely this balance that makes the Game of Life so fascinating. As with many chaotic systems, the most intricate and compelling structures emerge at the boundary where expansion and collapse are in delicate equilibrium.
