NetEase's Marvel Rivals, a resounding success with over ten million players in its first three days, has generated millions for the developer. However, a recent Bloomberg report reveals that NetEase CEO William Ding nearly canceled the game due to reservations about using licensed intellectual property.
This decision reflects a broader strategy at NetEase. Ding is currently streamlining the company, reducing its workforce, closing studios, and scaling back overseas investments. The aim is to create a more focused portfolio to combat recent growth stagnation and better compete with industry giants Tencent and MiHoYo.
Bloomberg's report indicates that the near-cancellation of Marvel Rivals, driven by Ding's reluctance to pay licensing fees for Marvel characters, cost NetEase significant funds. Despite this, the game launched and achieved remarkable success.
The restructuring continues. The recent layoff of the Marvel Rivals Seattle team, attributed to "organizational reasons," and the cessation of overseas investments in studios like Bungie, Devolver Digital, and Blizzard Entertainment, underscore this shift. The report suggests Ding prioritizes projects with the potential to generate hundreds of millions annually, though NetEase denies using arbitrary revenue targets for game viability.
Internal sources cited by Bloomberg describe a challenging work environment marked by Ding's volatile leadership style. His rapid decision-making, frequent changes of heart, pressure on employees to work excessive hours, and appointment of recent graduates to senior positions are highlighted. The frequency of project cancellations raises concerns about NetEase's future game releases in China.
NetEase's retreat from game investments coincides with ongoing instability in the global gaming market, particularly in the West. The industry has experienced consistent layoffs, cancellations, and studio closures, alongside numerous high-profile game failures despite significant investment.
