The Bloodborne PSX demake, a fan-made project, has recently been targeted by a copyright claim, following in the footsteps of the Bloodborne 60fps mod, which faced similar action last week. Lance McDonald, the creator of the 60fps mod, revealed that he received a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment, compelling him to remove links to his patch. This action came four years after the mod's initial release.
Lilith Walther, the mind behind Nightmare Kart (formerly known as Bloodborne Kart) and the visually striking Bloodborne PSX demake, announced via Twitter that a YouTube video showcasing the demake was hit with a copyright claim by MarkScan Enforcement. McDonald later clarified that MarkScan is a company employed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and it was the same entity that issued the DMCA against his 60fps patch page.
The ongoing saga raises questions about Sony's intentions with the Bloodborne franchise, which has been left untouched since its critically acclaimed launch on the PS4. Fans have been clamoring for an official next-gen patch to boost the game's frame rate from 30fps to 60fps, as well as a remaster and a sequel. Recent advancements in PS4 emulation technology, highlighted by Digital Foundry's coverage of ShadPS4, have enabled players to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, possibly prompting Sony's aggressive response.
McDonald speculated that Sony's actions might be clearing the way for an official Bloodborne 60fps remake announcement, to avoid confusion with existing fan projects in search engine results. He humorously referred to this as his "copium theory," suggesting Sony might be preparing to trademark terms like "Bloodborne 60fps" and "Bloodborne remake."
Despite these developments, Sony has not provided any official statements regarding future plans for Bloodborne. Shuhei Yoshida, a former PlayStation executive, shared his personal theory in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, suggesting that FromSoftware's creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki, might be protective of the game and unwilling to let others work on it due to his busy schedule.
As Bloodborne approaches its 10-year anniversary, the game remains dormant, with Miyazaki acknowledging in past interviews that a release on more modern hardware would be beneficial, though he often deflects questions about the game's future due to FromSoftware not owning the IP.
