Phantom Blade Zero Development Updates

Phantom Blade Zero Not A Soulslike, Features Four Difficulty Options

Phantom Blade Zero Playtime Estimated to be 20-30 Hours with Adjustable Difficulty

Phantom Blade Zero is setting itself apart from the Soulslike genre with its introduction of four difficulty options: easy, ordinary, difficult, and extremely difficult. This feature addresses the comparisons drawn by fans after the game's reveal at the PlayStation Showcase 2023, which highlighted its dark aesthetic and combat style. Game Director Soulframe has clarified on an official tweet following the Summer Game Fest 2024 that the game is not intended to be another Soulslike. Instead, the focus is on delivering "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."

While Phantom Blade Zero does take inspiration from Soulslike games with its multi-layered maps, multiple approach paths, and hidden areas, Soulframe emphasized that the similarities end there. He described the game as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending intense hack-and-slash action with expansive exploration.

Gameplay Features With Over 30+ Weapons, 20-30 Hours of Playthrough, And More

Phantom Blade Zero promises a rich gameplay experience with over 30 primary and 20 secondary weapons, each offering unique effects and combat styles. The main story is expected to provide 20-30 hours of playtime, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content to explore. Boss encounters are designed to be challenging, featuring at least two phases, with the option to restart from the second phase if defeated there, saving players from repeating the first phase.

A new game mode named "Li Wulin" allows players to rematch previously defeated bosses, unlocking new, hidden bosses to conquer. Additionally, there's a mechanic that influences the game's ending, though details on how it impacts the overall narrative and the number of alternate endings remain undisclosed.
