Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated spiritual successor to *Metal Gear*, titled Physint, is still quite a ways off, according to the legendary game director himself. In a recent interview with Le Film Francais, Kojima revealed that the project is expected to take “another five or six years” before it reaches completion. This timeline means his long-rumored aspirations of directing a film will have to remain on hold for now.
Kojima expressed that since leaving Konami in 2015 under high-profile circumstances, he has received numerous offers to develop games through his independent studio. However, his current focus remains firmly on delivering innovative gameplay experiences. “Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development,” he explained. “That will take me another five or six years. But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film.” He added, “I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!”
Physint, first announced by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst back in January 2024, continues to remain shrouded in mystery. At the time of its reveal, Kojima hinted that the project might blur the lines between gaming and film. Later, however, he clarified via X (formerly Twitter) that while it may not be a movie per se, its presentation—encompassing look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound—represents a new frontier in digital entertainment, potentially redefining what we consider interactive media.
Beyond Physint, Kojima Productions is juggling several ambitious projects. The team is hard at work on Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, scheduled to launch on June 26. Norman Reedus, who stars in the franchise, recently confirmed in an interview with IGN that he would love to play himself in the upcoming film adaptation of the original *Death Stranding*. Additionally, Kojima is involved in A24’s cinematic take on the game, further expanding the universe beyond the screen.
Another major title currently in development is OD, an all-new IP being co-created with Xbox Game Studios. The project features involvement from actress Hunter Schafer and acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele, signaling Kojima’s continued push into narrative-driven, cinematic gameplay experiences.
Last week, Kojima offered fans a rare glimpse into his creative process by revealing some of his discarded game concepts, including a fascinating idea for a ‘Forgetting Game’ where players lose key abilities and memories if they step away from the game for too long. Even more intriguingly, he shared that he had left a USB stick filled with unreleased game ideas behind for his team to explore after his passing—a digital legacy of innovation meant to inspire future creators.
