Digital Foundry has recently disclosed the final tech specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting a notable concern among developers regarding the system's GameChat feature and its impact on system resources. This feature, which was showcased during last month's Nintendo Direct, can be activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con controllers. This innovative functionality allows players to engage in multiplayer experiences by watching each other play, either the same or different games, and even interact via a built-in camera and microphone. The C button's chat menu is designed to be an all-encompassing multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most ambitious online initiative in years.
Digital Foundry also mentioned that Nintendo offers developers a GameChat testing tool. This tool simulates API latency and L3 cache misses, enabling developers to assess the GameChat system's impact on the console without needing live sessions. The provision of such a tool suggests that GameChat might affect game performance, raising questions about whether having GameChat active will impact the end-user experience. As Digital Foundry notes, "We'll be interested to see how GameChat may (or may not) impact game performance as this does seem to be an area of developer concern." The true effect on game performance won't be known until the Switch 2's release on June 5.
Alongside the GameChat discussion, Digital Foundry revealed the Switch 2's final tech specs. The console reserves 3GB of memory for the system, leaving 9GB available for games. In comparison, the original Switch reserved 0.8GB and had 3.2GB for games, indicating a significant increase in system resource allocation. Like other consoles, the Switch 2 does not provide full access to the GPU, as some resources are reserved by the system.

The Switch 2 boasts a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen, capable of 1080p resolution (1920x1080), which is a significant upgrade from the 6.2-inch screen of the original Switch, the 7-inch screen of the Switch OLED, and the 5.5-inch screen of the Switch Lite. It also supports HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz, allowing games to reach 120fps under optimal conditions.
When docked, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K resolution (3840x2160) at 60fps, or at 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. These enhanced graphics capabilities are facilitated by a "custom processor made by NVIDIA." For a detailed look at the Switch 2's technical specifications, Digital Foundry's comprehensive analysis is highly recommended.
