CoD Studio Loses Lead for Online Experience

After a 15-year tenure, Greg Reisdorf, Call of Duty's Multiplayer Creative Director, departs Sledgehammer Games. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011).

Reisdorf's impact is undeniable, ranging from his early work on Modern Warfare 3 (including memorable sequences like Soap's gurney scene in "Blood Brothers") to his leadership role in the multiplayer development of the 2023 Modern Warfare 3, overseeing live seasons and content creation. He played a key part in shaping the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, contributing significantly to the gameplay mechanics of Advanced Warfare (boost jumps, dodging, tactical reloads, and unique weapon features).

His reflections on past projects reveal insights into design choices. He expressed reservations about Advanced Warfare's "Pick 13" system, believing killstreaks shouldn't impact essential weapon selections. He also highlighted the quick reversal of Call of Duty: WW2's initially restrictive class-based weapon system. His preference for traditional three-lane maps, prioritizing fun over strict military realism, is evident in his work on Vanguard.

The recent Modern Warfare 3 provided further opportunities for Reisdorf to showcase his talent. He enjoyed revisiting and enhancing classic Modern Warfare 2 maps, adding subtle details (like Shepherd's skull in Rust). As creative director, he spearheaded the development of numerous live season modes (including Snowfight and Infectious Holiday in Season 1), contributing to over 20 modes across Modern Warfare 3's post-launch lifecycle.

Reisdorf's departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Call of Duty's history, but his statement suggests he'll continue his career in the gaming industry. His legacy is cemented in the many memorable multiplayer experiences he helped create.
