A new joint report from Comscore and Anzu reveals compelling insights into US gamers' habits, preferences, and spending trends. The study, titled "Comscore's 2024 State of Gaming Report," examines gaming behavior across various platforms and genres.
The report highlights the remarkable success of the freemium model, with a staggering 82% of US gamers making in-app purchases in these games last year. Freemium games, combining free access with optional paid features, have become increasingly popular. Titles like Genshin Impact and League of Legends exemplify this successful model.
The freemium model's widespread adoption, particularly in mobile gaming, is undeniable. Maplestory, launched in North America in 2005, is often cited as a pioneer of this approach, demonstrating the viability of monetizing virtual items.
The continued success of freemium games has significantly benefited developers and major platforms like Google, Apple, and Microsoft. Research from Corvinus University points to the model's appeal stemming from elements such as utility, self-expression, social interaction, and competitive gameplay. These factors incentivize players to purchase in-game items to enhance their experience or avoid interruptions.
Comscore's Chief Commercial Officer, Steve Bagdasarian, emphasized the report's significance, stating that it underscores gaming's cultural impact and the importance of understanding gamer behavior for brands seeking to engage this audience.
The report's findings resonate with comments made earlier this year by Tekken's Katsuhiro Harada regarding in-game purchases in Tekken 8. Harada explained that revenue from these transactions directly contributes to the game's development budget, particularly given the rising costs of game production.
