Doom: The Dark Ages Unveils New Gameplay Features

by Dylan May 07,2025

In a revealing interview with EDGE magazine, the developers behind the highly anticipated Doom: The Dark Ages have unveiled exciting new details about the game's gameplay. This installment promises to place a greater emphasis on storytelling, with the narrative taking center stage. Furthermore, the levels will be the largest ever in the Doom series, offering players a sandbox-like experience that blends exploration with intense action.

Game director Hugo Martin and studio head Marty Stratton provided key insights into the game's development. Unlike previous Doom titles, where much of the backstory was tucked away in text logs, Doom: The Dark Ages will embrace a more direct storytelling method. The game's atmosphere will shift towards a medieval aesthetic, minimizing futuristic elements. Even the iconic weapons will undergo a design overhaul to seamlessly integrate with this new setting.

While maintaining the series' tradition of distinct levels, Doom: The Dark Ages will introduce the most expansive environments to date. Players will transition from tight dungeon crawls to vast open-world areas, with the game's chapters divided into "acts." Adding to the gameplay variety, players will have the opportunity to control both a dragon and a mech, enhancing the dynamic nature of the game.

A notable addition to the Slayer’s arsenal is a versatile shield that also functions as a chainsaw. This shield can be thrown at enemies, with its effects varying based on the material it strikes—be it flesh, armor, energy shields, or other substances. Additionally, the shield facilitates a dash attack, enabling rapid movement across the battlefield. With the absence of double jumps and roars from earlier games, this shield mechanic will be pivotal for player mobility. It also supports parrying, complete with customizable difficulty settings and precise timing windows.

Parrying in Doom: The Dark Ages serves as a "reload" mechanism for melee attacks, while engaging in melee combat replenishes ammunition for primary weapons, echoing the chainsaw mechanic from DOOM Eternal. Players will have a range of melee options at their disposal, including a fast-paced gauntlet, a balanced shield, and a slower but powerful mace.
