The iconic cinematic camera angle, a staple of the Grand Theft Auto series since Grand Theft Auto 3, has an unexpected origin story. Former Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij recently revealed that this now-beloved feature stemmed from the surprisingly dull experience of riding a train in the game's development.
Vermeij, a veteran who contributed to several landmark GTA titles including GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 4, has been sharing behind-the-scenes insights on his blog and Twitter. His latest revelation details the evolution of the cinematic camera.
Initially, Vermeij found the train rides monotonous. He explored skipping the ride entirely, but technical limitations (streaming issues) prevented this. His solution? He implemented a dynamic camera that shifted between viewpoints along the train tracks, enhancing the otherwise boring journey. This seemingly minor addition proved unexpectedly popular when a colleague suggested applying the same concept to car driving. The team found the result "surprisingly entertaining," solidifying the cinematic camera's place in the game.
While the camera remained largely unchanged in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, it underwent revisions in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas by another developer. A fan's experiment removing the cinematic camera from GTA 3 highlighted its impact, demonstrating a stark contrast to the original, more static viewpoint Vermeij had initially envisioned.
Vermeij's contributions extend beyond the camera angle. He also confirmed details from a significant GTA leak, revealing a scrapped online mode for GTA 3 that included features like character creation and online missions. He personally developed a rudimentary deathmatch mode, but the project was ultimately abandoned due to its unfinished state. The cinematic camera, however, proved to be a lasting and impactful innovation.
